The Gift of the Magi

One of my favorite stories, period. It's associated with the holidays -- and rightly so -- but I think of it as one of the most kind-hearted tales ever written. Romantic, true, and full of selfless intention. So sentimental and so needed. Thank you, O. Henry.

I'll be rereading this weekend. Do you love it, too?

I do love this story! I like even more as I get older, it's so simple and beautiful. O. Henry in general is pretty great, I have a real soft spot for Springtime a la Carte, too.

Possibly my favorite O. Henry story ever, although I also adore Ransom of the Red Chief.

Ladies, my dreams come true here. I have a place to talk about forearms, cheese dip, and O. Henry-focused adoration.

This begs the question, though: What's your favorite short story ever?

I probably would go "The Secret Miracle" by Borges. But there are so many.

Oh man. And "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty." I'm a Thurber girl, through and through.

Hmm, tough call but I would have to go with "Just Before the War With The Eskimos" by Salinger.

I haven't read that, Bess. Thanks for the rec!

Alysia, "For Esme, With Love and Squalor" in the same book (Nine Stories) is also excellent. I re-read both that and "Eskimos" last night and might have to give the edge to "Esme" this time around.
