Where Are We Now?

David Bowie is one of my lifelong creative idols.

There was a lot written about the man today, in honor of his birthday and surprise single. The song is unabashedly arty and deeply romantic, my two favorite things. It's about place -- "where are we now?" -- a topic I'm rather into. Metaphorical places and real places around Berlin.

The feel and sound of the single are sublime. Here are the song's last three lines, which I love love love:

As long as there's fire
As long as there's me
As long as there's you

Two more Bowie things. "Life on Mars?" and "Oh! You Pretty Things" are both on the mega Wilfair playlist.

Also? "Labyrinth" is one of my favorite films.

I've taken care to never exactly cast Fair Finley in my head. Fair is you, if you want her to be (to me she is you -- I hope that is okay and not too forward). But there are indirect inspirations for our bellows-hearted hotelier. Jennifer Connelly is both spunky and sweet in "Labyrinth," though she's about a half decade too young to play Fair.

You're a "Labyrinth" fan too, I'm guessing? David Bowie as a crooning, spiky-haired goblin? YES.

This song is now on the "Fairwil" writing playlist, a book that's very "where are we now?" in a few ways. I hope the book will be as lush and romantic as this song makes me feel.

"You're a "Labyrinth" fan too, I'm guessing?" CORRECT! My kid has known the "You remind me of the babe" bit since he was 3 years old. Damn fine parenting, I think.

Jamila, obviously you and your truly damn fine parenting skills need to be featured on this page. Because you're doing it right.
